NOAA 18/19 Transmission change
Written by Patrik
2009-12-20 00:31:21
Date/Time(UTC) of Initial Implementation:
22 December 2009, Time 000230 UTC

Details/Specifics of Change:
The APT services on NOAA-18 and NOAA-19 will modified to improve the data
content.  Traditionally, NOAA provides visible data and infrared data
during the daylight portion of the orbit and infrared data during the
night-time portion of the orbit.  This allowed the APT users to have
access to usable and complementary data at all times. Therefore, the new
APT data content for the PM spacecrafts will be:

NOAA-18
-         APT Channel A:  AVHRR Channel 1, ground track day
-         APT Channel A:  AVHRR Channel 3B, ground track night
-         APT Channel B:  AVHRR Channel 4, entire orbit

NOAA-19
-         APT Channel A:  AVHRR Channel 2, ground track day
-         APT Channel A:  AVHRR Channel 3B, ground track night
-         APT Channel B:  AVHRR Channel 4, entire orbit

Since NOAA-18 is in close proximity of NOAA -19, the use of AVHRR Channel
2 (NOAA -19 APT) in the daylight portion of the orbit will enable APT
users to acquire data for cloud and surface mapping.  This will complement
AVHRR Channel 1 (NOAA-18 APT) for land/water boundaries.  The use of AVHRR
Channel 1 and Channel 2 in the same orbital plane will allow APT users the
full range of visible data.

On Tuesday, 23 June 2009, NOAA will implement the following VTX configuration
changes:

NOAA 18 frequency change from 137.1000 to 137.9125 MHz on orbit 21088, VTX1 to VTX2.

NOAA 19 frequency change from 137.9125 to 137.1000 MHz on orbit 1936, VTX2 to VTX1.

APTDecoder 2.0.5.85

The main new features are rotor control support, The Nova Meditor, and Les Hamiltons CLUT creator is linked.

NOTE: The installer will install automatically the CLUT Creator if selected. If you update using the patch you must install it manually by browsing to the temp folder (eg c:\aptdecoder\temp) and lauch the clutcreator-setup.exe.

UPDATE: Untick CLUT Creator if you are installing from the SetupAPTDecoder-XX.XX.XX.XX. After you have installed APTDecoder successfully download the latest CLUT Creator 2.10 and install.

Start the CLUT Creator from menu Tools->CLUT Creator...

Thanks Les!

Rotor control

This rotor control will apply to almost any LPT driver.

NOTE: It has not been tested on MS Vista.

Settings

You will find settings for the rotor driver in menu Settings.

Enter the LPT address, jog step speed and how many steps per revolution your motors do.

For both azimuth and elevation, configure to which pins they are connected to and the rotation direction.

Pin settings

Calibrate

The next step is to jog the antenna until it is pointing toward North and zero degrees elevation. Click the Apply position button when the antenna is aligned.

Click OK to exit and save changes.

The Nova Meditor

NOVA Meditor

The Nova Meditor is a useful tool to look up different astronomical events like sun-, moon-, planet- and object rise and set times.
